Q. I just graduated from Carleton but would like to be part of the badminton club. Am I eligible to be a member?
A. We have other members that have graduated and joined the club in previous years. As volunteers that run the club, we don't have the responsibility of checking to see if any of our members are current students or have paid the Athletics Fee. I believe the challenge would be entering the gym facility (through the turnstiles). To get through the turnstile you need to swipe your Carleton University ID. If your ID card can get you through, then you'll have no problems. If it doesn't, you'll have the predicament of either purchasing an athletics fee (on top of the CUBC fee) or find an alternative/creative method of getting into the gym. However, Athletics employees have the right to request to see Carleton University ID at any time.
Q. Does Carleton University have a badminton team?
A. No, Carleton University does not have a badminton team. There are a couple reasons that I can think of as to why. Firstly, you have to have a coach and it's not easy to find someone willing to accept very little pay to coach every day for a few hours. Secondly, there is probably very little funding. So players would need to do their own fund raising to afford travelling to tournaments, hotel and food expenses, and school uniforms. I do not believe the reason there is no team because of lack of skilled players.
Q. I'm a beginner, can I still join the club?
A. CUBC is primarily beginners and considered entry-level badminton skill. While we do have some advanced players, beginner and intermediate level players dominate.
Q. How does the tag system at CUBC work?
A. There are 3 benefits of the CUBC tag system. Firstly, to distribute fair court time amongst all of the members present at the badminton session. Secondly, to create a variety of games and avoid repeat games with the same players. Lastly, to keep games with players of approximately the same level.

CUBC understands that it can be frustrating for some players to be the odd person out, so on each tag the person's name, gender and skill level is quickly identifiable. Every 15 minutes a court rotation is called. At which time, all members end their game and check the front game board for the next game. Members can tell their next game by locating the position of their tag on the game board. If it's on a court, they are playing, otherwise the member sits off and allows other players to play.

Members can request for a game by letting one of the executives know.
Q. Does the Carleton University Badminton Club provide coaching?
A. No, CUBC does not provide any coaching, drills, or technique workshops.

In the 2006-2007 season, CUBC paid for a professional coach to teach badminton technique for 1 entire session. It was a huge success and not a single member, present at that session, didn't follow along with the lessons. Perhaps CUBC will take a poll to repeat another 1 time coaching session. If you are interested in receiving coaching I highly recommend coaching lessons from Dominic Soong (former ranked #2 World Mens' Doubles). His website is http://www.soong.ca.
Q. Is the Norm Fenn Gym on the Carleton University campus?
A. There have been many comments about the confusion as to where the Norm Fenn Gym is. The Norm Fenn Gymnasium is attached to the Athletics Centre by a bridge. It's an old gym where the Carleton Ravens used to play (long time ago). Click on the menu item Location for a map with arrows indicating the exact location on the campus.
Q. On the registration form, how do I know if I'm a beginner or advanced?
A. If you're not too sure, start with labelling yourself as intermediate and if you feel the need to change levels, it can be done without a problem. The skill level question is only used to help match you up with games that contain other players of approximately the same level. For more detail, I will try to define the levels:

Level 1 (Beginner):
-learning how to do short serves
-learning how to clear to the backcourt

Level 2 (Beginner-Intermediate):
-learning how to do long serves
-learning how to do drop shots
-learning where to position yourself on the court
-learning the footwork to move around

Level 3 (Intermediate):
-learning how to smash
-learning how do back-hand drops

Level 4 (Intermediate-Advanced):
-learning how to return smashes with control
-learning how to do back-hand clears
-learning how to do kill shots

Level 5 (Advanced):
-learning how to do back-hand smashes
-learning how to do jump smashes
-learning how to do cross-court drop shots
-learning how to drive shots when close up at the net

If you have mastered all of the above skills, chances are, this club is too low level for you.
Q. How much does it cost at other badminton clubs?
A. Our club fees are way below competitive club fees. Club membership fees from the year 2006:

Club Namecost/8monthshours/weekcourts/sessioncost/hour*court
CUBC$503 (new!)6$2.77
Swallow$10034$8.33
Turnbull$18066$5.00
Westboro$13094$3.61
RA Centre$257.33 student1198$0.27
Bell$7036$3.89
Earl of March$1103.56$5.24

Variables not measured by the cost:
-quality of club players skill level
-quality of club floors, nets, and lighting
-quality of badminton shuttles/birds
-quantity of play time per member per session
Q. Do you have any badminton on Weekdays?
A. There is open badminton on Mondays and Wednesdays in the Norm Fenn Gym (ask the athletics desk for times). The cost is free.

And, there are intramurals ($50 per team, $25 per individual):
Men's Doubles: Mondays 5 or 6pm in the Norm Fenn Gym
Women's Doubles: Mondays 5 or 6pm in the Norm Fenn Gym
Mixed Doubles: Mondays 5 or 6pm in the Norm Fenn Gym

Click Here for more info about intramurals.

note: The badminton club is not associated with open badminton and intramurals.
Q. Are children allowed into the badminton club?
A. The badminton club is heavily funded by tuition fees from Carleton U students, and therefore the club should be for students, alumni, and faculty only. Carleton University Clubs & Societies has stated in a meeting concerning this topic that children do not fall under this category. Athletics also feels safety and liability are not worth the risk. Funding is mainly from tuition paid for by students which is how the Badminton club maintains their low registration fees, therefore children are unfortunately not able to play at the club.

Alternatively, Nepean sportsplex welcomes families and mixes adults with children. They have a pay-per-visit system every sunday 8am - 1pm. Their contact information is:
