April 29th, 2012 Update:

Hi everyone,

First off, we'd like to congratulate Daniel Li and Mrinal Chakravarty for their positions as President and Treasurer, respectively, for the upcoming year 2012-2013!

The summer is quickly approaching with CUBC's last session on April 29, 2012. This has been truly a great year for CUBC with two successful tournaments, a doubles ladder, and CUBC's first ever t-shirts! We'd like to thank our volunteers Daniel, Cassie, Jack, Melissa, and Mrinal for all their help--couldn't have done it without you :) And so before we all enjoy the summer, please take note of the following:

The prices for the year 2012-2013 are set to be $60 for full year (September 2012 - April 2013) or $40 per semester (Winter/Fall). Registration is now open, however please note that registration is only complete once both a filled out registration form and payment has been received. Find more information on how to become a CUBC member on our Registration page.

Secondly, if you are interested in being a volunteer executive for the upcoming year, you are very welcome to email us at exec.cubc@gmail.com and let us know! Duties will include opening and closing, setting up nets and poles, court changes, recruiting, and assisting in planning/coordinating events. Find more information regarding volunteering on our Volunteer page.

Thirdly, we would love to hear feedback from you guys on how you thought this year went for CUBC as well as improvements that could be made in time for the upcoming year! Feel free to e-mail us at exec.cubc@gmail.com.

Have a great summer and we can't wait to see you all in September!

November 22, 2011 Update:

Hi members,

This is a reminder to everyone that our last CUBC session for the Fall term will be on December 18th 2011. Our winter term will commence on January 15th, 2012. You can register for the Winter term (if you haven't done so already) in-person during Sunday sessions or online at the Registration page.

Also, for all Ladder players...
Our mini-ladder tournament is coming up fast this December! The mini-ladder tournament has the top 8 teams in the ladder participating in a single elimination tournament bracket during a Sunday session where the top 3 teams will receive a prize. Other prizes will also be given out to Biggest Mover and a random Door Prize. So far, according to suggestions made by ladder players, December 4th is the most ideal date for the majority of teams. We will confirm this date on Sunday. If you'd like to make a suggestion, simply reply to this e-mail :) This upcoming Sunday November 27th will be the last session for teams to move up and down, so at this time we will announce the top 8 teams to play in the mini-ladder tournament.

Ladder details can be found at this Google Doc: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmiYp_0_N6yKdEFVb1dYTVJTblI4MTZrN2FRZWRaakE#gid=6

Have a great week!

October 17, 2011 Update:

Hello everyone!

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving weekend and that midterms aren't keeping you off the badminton court! :)
A few things we would like to notify you about for this week:

Ladder System Updates
We realize that it's been a bit chaotic with the new ladder system and we'd like to keep it as organized and clear as possible. We apologize for any confusion regarding the ladder. To make sure everyone is on the same page, here is a brief overview of how the ladder system works and its rules (you can find the full rules on the Ladder Page):

  • challenges can be made from 2:30-3:00pm only (new rule in effect immediately; if there is time, we will have another round of challenges after the first round of ladder matches are completed)
  • ladder games will commence at 3:00pm to ensure all challenges are completed for that session
  • ladder games will be on courts 4 & 5
  • teams can challenge "1up" or "2up" above their ranks. If you challenge "1up" and lose, nothing happens. If you challenge "2up" and lose, you go down one rank. If you win your challenge, you take the place of the opponent while the opponent and teams in between shift down -- so challenge wisely :)
  • the ladder line on the Player Board will be updated immediately after each match is completed
  • matches will be played in order of highest to lowest ranked teams
  • teams must accept challenges if they have not yet played two ladder games
  • teams that challenge cannot retract or change a challenge after it has been submitted
  • absent teams will be ignored during challenges (ie. if an absent team is above a challenger, the challenger's "1up" and "2up" challenges effectively jump the absent team(s) becoming "2up" and "3up" or "3up" and "4up"). Absent teams risk shifting down if lower ranked teams jump over.
  • registration for the ladder system has closed
  • there will be a vote to decide whether or not to have a mini tournament on December 4, 2011. if voting results are for "no mini-tournament", the ladder will continue until dec18th.
  • prizes will be given out to 1st place, 2nd place, biggest mover, and door prizes (you must be present on the last day of the ladder to claim your prize, last day is TBA)
  • results of all ladder matches will be posted on the CUBC website after every Sunday
  • Details of the ladder matches/rankings and team performance can be found on our Google document.

Fall Tournament
The deadline for registering in our Fall Tournament is next week, October 23rd! Save your spot in our tournament by registering in-person next Sunday at 2-5pm or register online at on the Tournaments page. If you do not have a partner, simply submit a Partner Request by replying to this e-mail at stating whether you are looking for a doubles partner, mixed partner or both.

Winter Registration
Available spots for winter memberships are disappearing quickly so if you have not yet registered, do it by registrating in-person or online by checking out the Register page. as soon as possible to secure your place during this upcoming Winter term (January to April).

If there are any questions concerning the Ladder System, Fall Tournament, Registration (or if you just feel like chatting with us), do not hesitate to email us and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

That's it for this week, see you guys next Sunday :)

October 10, 2011 Update:

Hi everyone!

I hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving weekend! Other than the fact that most teams were away for Thanksgiving, our first ladder session was very successful! We now have 16 registered teams and are therefore not accepting any more Ladder registrants. However, those that have partner requested are still able to register. We now have a complete list of all the ranked Ladder teams on our website along with the matches played today with their results so check that out if you're curious :D

Our Fall Tournament is filling up quickly so save your spot by registering online or in-person at a Sunday session! If you don't have a partner yet, remember that you can always partner request by emailing us at exec.cubc@gmail.com letting us know if you're looking for a doubles or mixed partner or both.

One last thing, the link to the CUBC photos is available on the Pics page. Just be sure that you are logged into Facebook and are a friend of the CUBC Facebook account (our name is Carleton U Badminton) if you'd like to view them.

See you guys next week!

October 3, 2011 Update:

Hey everyone,

Thanks to Vivian and her camera, we now have lots of CUBC photographs! These photographs will be posted up on our Facebook and our website. So if you haven't added us on Facebook yet, our name is Carleton U Badminton -- please add us to learn about updates asap! The photographs will not be posted up until Saturday Oct8 therefore if you DO NOT want photographs of you posted up online, just let us know by Saturday Oct8 and we won't put them up.

Regarding the ladder system, we have 13 registered teams so far which is awesome! Teams may begin challenging next Sunday session Oct9. The list of teams and match results will be updated on our website regularly. For more information on the ladder system, check the Ladder System page.

Just a reminder that our Fall Tournament is coming up on October 30th and the registration deadline is October 23rd! There are limited spots so don't delay! You may register online or in-person. For more information on our Fall Tournament, check our Tournaments page.

If you need a partner for either the Ladder System or the Fall Tournament, just email us at exec.cubc@gmail.com letting us know if you're looking for a doubles or mixed partner.

And one more thing.. there WILL be a Sunday 2-5pm session on Oct9.

Enjoy your week and happy thanksgiving!

September 25, 2011 Update:

Hi everyone,

The first month of CUBC is almost over and we've got quite a few things planned for CUBC :) First off, CUBC is accepting registrants for our very first Ladder System! In short, the ladder system is basically a way to set in place a system for challenges or competitive fun. Plus, it costs only $5 per team to join and there'll be prizes too! We will be accepting registrations in-person or online. For more information about the ladder system and how to register, go to the Ladder System page.

CUBC's Fall Tournament is also coming up very soon on Sunday October 30th! The registration and payment deadline will be on Sunday October 23rd. We will be accepting in-person registrations as well as online registrations. For more information about our Fall Tournament, please check our Tournaments page.

In terms of guest fees, please note that we CANNOT guaruntee spots for guests due to the maximum capacity of members. Sorry for any inconviences this may cause. Also note that we will only be accepting guests at 3:00pm. This way we will be able to better judge whether we are able to accept guests for that session and how many we may accept. Another change being made to guest rules are that the guest fees will still go towards the membership fee but only up to $10 worth. For example, if you pay a guest fee for three sessions ($5 x 3 visits = $15) only $10 will be discounted from your membership fee.

And finally, we're still selling t-shirts this upcoming weekend for $10! Half of them are already gone so get them quick :D

Have a great week!

CUBC Execs.

September 11, 2011 Update:

Hello everyone!

We had a great turn out for our first session, thank you everyone for coming out! We realize that it was extremely busy (due to the fact that it was our first session of the year) and we try our best to have a good balance between play time and waiting time for our members. For this reason, CUBC will from now on, have a waiting list due to our full capacity and therefore will not be accepting any new members for the Fall term.

However, if you would still like to join, you can fill out and e-mail/hand-in an application found on the Register page where you will then be placed on the waiting list. Once a spot frees up, we will let you know via email. The waiting list runs on a "first come first serve" basis.

In terms of guests, the guest fee remains $5/session, however, if there are many members during that particular session, we hold the right to disallow guests in order to avoid over-capacity and maintain quality for our members.

Also, we will be selling CUBC t-shirts next Sunday Sept. 18, 2011! The shirts will sell for $10 each and come in colors: slate or white (if you're curious as to what they look like and were at our first session, the execs were wearing them). We have sizes S, M, L; while quantities last. We are also giving away CUBC pins/buttons FOR FREE!!

And finally, due to popular demand, CUBC will likely be holding a Ladder System (optional for members) where doubles teams are ranked and then able to challenge rank(s) above them in order to climb up the ladder to the top. There will be prizes. The Ladder System will most likely begin sometime in October. This is just a heads up so you may begin finding your doubles partner(s) :)

That's it for now and we hope to see you all next Sunday!

August 20, 2011: Our First Session is Coming Up!

Hey Everyone!

The first session of CUBC is on Sunday, September 11, 2011! It will be held at Carleton University at the Norm Fenn gym from 2-5pm.

NOTE: Unfortunately, we will not be accepting guests for the first session. We apologize in advance for an inconvenience this may cause.

During this session, we will be collecting membership fees from those who already registered online as well as accepting in-person registrations. Therefore, if...

  • You've already submitted an online registration please bring your membership fee (either $35 or $55) during this session.
  • If you haven't registered yet, you can either submit a registration online by sending us an application form available under the Register page. and then paying during the first session, OR come in person on the first session where you can fill out a form and pay at the same time.

Please remember that you must pay before you can play, and you must pay in full (you cannot pay in half one time and then half another time). Keep in mind that we only accept payments in cash.

This first session will also be our first play day. So after you become a registered member, feel free to start playing some badminton :) If you cannot make it to this session, you can register and/or pay during any of the following sessions but just remember that you cannot play until you pay.

Also note that Carleton University has started charging for parking on weekends ($2 flat rate all day). Alternate routes to getting to Carleton University include public transit (4, 7 and the O-train). For more info go to the Oc Transpo website. For directions on how to get to Norm Fenn gym once at Carleton University, please refer to the Location page.

Also, we are changing our official club email to exec.cubc@gmail.com, so please contact us from now on using our new e-mail address.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns by emailing us at exec.cubc@gmail.com. Hope to see you all soon!
