The Postdoctoral Community

We all know that postdocs can sometimes be very isolated in departments, stuck between grad students and faculty and not really a part of either.  CUPA has been developing a program of social events to get the postdocs mixing and make them aware of others in their situations on campus.  Here are a few of the events that we are currently seeking to establish:

Postdocs in Pubs - It is a well-known fact that academic output exhibits a quadratic relationship with alcohol consumption: an initial increase followed by a precipitous decline.  In order to promote the former, CUPA is looking into hiring a corner of Mike's Place, the pub on campus run by the Graduate Students Association (GSA) to hold events specifically for postdocs.  We hope to have more details soon.

Postdoc Brunch - We also recognise that some people prefer work to beer and that a morning coffee/brunch might be a viable alternative for socialising.  Baker's is located on the fourth floor of the Uni Centre and offers a variety of brunch and breakfast options from 7.30am.

Postdoc intramural sports - For those who want to burn off the beer and brunch, we could organise intramural sports teams.  We will explore this at a later date.

Occasional social events - Beer and cheese tasting, anyone?
