Preamble
Mission/Mandate
The Carleton Human Rights Society is an academic society associated with the Human Rights Program at Carleton University. We are concerned with raising awareness of human rights violations and fighting global injustice. We are completely student driven, and take up the issues that concern our members around the globe! Our main goals are to raise awareness and funds, to become active in the human rights field and to promote the social gathering of those who are passionate about human rights.
Article I
Name of the Organization
1.0 The name of the organization shall be known as the Carleton Human Rights Society and herein after shall be referred to as the organization.
Article II
Purpose of the Organization
- The organization shall work towards:
- Providing an academic and social environment related to the study of human rights as an interdisciplinary academic discipline;
- Benefiting its membership, the human rights program as well as the Carleton Community in enhancing the University experience;
- Increasing the visibility of the human rights program on and off campus through special events and fundraisers;
- Create awareness of specific topics of interest within the human rights field, to be determined by the year’s membership base.
Article III
Structure of the Organization
- The General Membership shall be the legislative body of the Organization and shall be composed of all fee-paying members;
- The Executive shall be the Administrative body of the Organization and shall be composed of elected members from the General Membership.
Article IV
Membership
- Membership shall:
- Be open to all graduate, undergraduate and alumni students of Carleton University,
- Have the right:
- To speak on all matters pertaining to the organization;
- To have a vote at all general membership meetings;
- To vote in all elections;
- To seek nomination for any executive position;
- To partake in any events of the organization
- Be duly informed of any and all meetings, events, and the elections of the organization.
- Membership in the organization shall be valid from September 1st to September 15th of the following year.
- In the event that a member of the organization violates the organization’s constitution or CUAS’s constitution and disciplinary action is being considered, the executive shall report to the coordinators responsible of Clubs and Societies for CUSA.
Article V
Executive
- Coordinators shall work together to:
- Be accountable to the general membership on all matters of the workings of the Organization and the Executive;
- Act as the leaders for the Organization and the Executive;
- Be the contact person when dealing with other groups and CUSA;
- Be responsible for the efficient and accountable running of the Organization;
- Be the Executive’s contact person to all members of the Organization;
- Be responsible for ensuring that the Executive and the Organization follows the CUSA and Organization’s Constitution as well as all applicable CUSA and Carleton by-laws;
- Attend all meetings.
- Treasurer shall:
- Answer to the Coordinators and be accountable to the General Membership in all matters of finance and fundraising;
- Be responsible for ensuring that the Organization does not run a deficit;
- Organize fundraising events and services;
- Be responsible for paying expenses required for the running of the Organization;
- Be elected by the Membership;
- Attend all meetings.
- Secretary shall:
- Take notes and meeting minutes stating topics of discussion, who is in attendance and what decisions were made;
- Update the Organizations e-mail list, adding and removing members where necessary;
- Be elected by the Membership;
- Attend all meetings.
Article VI
Meetings
- General Meetings shall:
- Be open to all members of the Organization;
- Occur at least one (1) time per month;
- Be advertised to the Membership with given sufficient notice;
- Be called by the Executive;
- Follow a loose social environment where members will be able to discuss issues concerning human rights and hear reports from the Executive about upcoming events and fundraisers.
Article VII
Elections
- The Executive shall be elected for a term of one year.
- Notice to all General Members of the Organization shall be given fourteen (14) days prior to elections.
- The elections shall proceed as follows:
- Members may nominate any General Member for any position of the Executive;
- Each nomination must be seconded by a General Member of the Organization;
- After all nominations have been heard, nominations shall be closed and Speeches shall be heard from all nominees;
- Where there is only one nominee for a position that person shall be Acclaimed and deemed elected to that position.
Article VIII
Dissolution of the Organization
1.0 Upon dissolution of the Organization all assets gained through FACCS shall be returned to FACCS .
