Notation of Medieval and Renaissance Music
Major paleographic and transcriptional problems encountered in early chant notation, square and Franconian notations, innovations of the Ars Nova and mannerist phrases, white notation, and various lute tablatures. Detailed study and transcription of selected examples from the ninth to sixteenth centuries.Prerequisite: MUSI 2100, MUSI 2101 or permission of the instructor.
Lectures three hours a week.
