The Academic Year 2009-2010

Undergraduate Studies

The following schedule contains the dates prescribed by the University Senate for academic activities. Dates relating to fee payment, cancellation of course selections, late charges, and other fees or charges will be published in the Important Dates and Deadlines section of the Registration Website (carleton.ca/registration).  

The academic year is divided into three terms:

Summer term: May - August

Fall term: September - December

Winter term: January - April

 

Courses are offered in the following patterns:

Early summer: May - June

Late summer: July - August

Full summer: May - August

Fall term: September - December

Winter term: December - April

Fall/winter: September - April

Courses are offered during the day and the evening.

Summer Term 2009
May 8, 2009
•  First day of classes.
May 18, 2009
•  Statutory holiday, University closed.
May 25-29, 2009
•  Classes suspended.
June 26, 2009
•  Last day of non-Engineering classes (early summer).
•  Full summer classes resume July 6.
June 29, 2009
•  Last day of Engineering classes (early summer).
June 30, July 2-4 (includes Saturday), 2009
•  Early summer final examinations will be held. It may be necessary to schedule examinations during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa.
July 6, 2009
•  Late summer classes begin.
•  Full summer classes resume.
August 3, 2009
•  Statutory holiday, University closed.
August 17, 2009
•  Last day of non-Engineering classes.
August 18, 2009
•  Last day of Engineering classes.
August 18-19, 2009
•  Review period. Some lectures, laboratories, review tutorials, etc. may take place.
August 20-25 (including Saturday), 2009
•  Final examinations in full summer and late summer courses will be held. It may be necessary to schedule examinations during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa.
October 2-3, 2009
•  Summer term deferred final examinations will be held.
Fall Term 2009
September 1, 2009
• Last day for receipt of applications from potential fall graduates.
September 7, 2009
• Statutory holiday, University closed.
September 8, 2009
• Fall term begins.
September 8-9, 2009
• Academic Orientation. All students are expected to be on campus. Class and laboratory preparations, departmental introductions for students, and other academic preparation activities will be held.
September  9, 2009
• Orientation for Teaching Assistants.
September  10, 2009
• Fall and fall/winter classes begin.
September 23, 2009
• Last day for registration.
• Last day to change courses or sections for fall/winter and fall term courses.
September 30, 2009
• Last day for receipt of applications for review of final grades in summer term courses.
•Last day to withdraw from fall term and fall/winter courses with a full fee adjustment .
October  9, 2009
• University Day at Carleton. Undergraduate classes suspended.
•December examination schedule fall term final and fall/winter mid-terms) available online.
October  12, 2009
• Statutory holiday, University closed.
October 15, 2009
• Last day for receipt of applications for admission to a degree program for the 2010 winter term from applicants whose documents originate from outside Canada or the United States.
November 15, 2009
• Last day for receipt of applications for admission to a degree program for the 2010 winter term.

November  16, 2009
• Last day to withdraw from fall term courses.
• Last day to submit, to the Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities, Formal Examination Accommodation Forms for December examinations.
November  23, 2009
• Last day for tests or examinations in courses below the 4000-level before the final examination period (see Examination Regulations in the Academic Regulations of the University section of this Calendar).
December 1, 2009
• Last day for receipt of applications from potential winter (February) graduates.
December  7, 2009
• Last day of fall-term classes.
• Last day for receipt of applications for degree program transfers for winter term of fall/winter session.

December 8, 2009
• Review Day. Some lectures, laboratories, review tutorials, etc. may take place.
• Fall term ends. Last day for handing in term assignments for fall term courses, subject to any earlier course deadline.
December 9-22 (including Saturdays), 2009
• Final examinations in fall term courses and mid-term examinations in fall/winter courses will be held. It may be necessary to schedule examinations during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa.
December  25, 2009 to January 1, 2010
• University closed.

January 4, 2010
• Winter term begins.
•Winter-term classes begin.
January 15, 2010
• Last day for registration for winter term courses.
• Last day to change courses or sections for winter term courses.
January 31
• Last day for receipt of applications for review of final grades in fall-term courses.
• Last day for withdrawal from winter term and winter portion of fall/winter courses with full fee adjustment .
February 1, 2010
 
• Last day for receipt of applications for admission to the Bachelor of Architectural Studies and the Bachelor of Social Work degree programs for the 2010-2011 fall/winter session.
February 12, 2010
• April examination schedule available online.
February 13-20 (may, include evenings and Saturdays), 2010
• Fall-term deferred examinations will be written.
February 15, 2010
• Family day, statutory holiday. University closed.
February 15-19, 2010
• Winter Break, classes suspended.
March 1, 2010
• Last day for receipt of applications from potential Spring graduates.
• Last day for receipt of applications to the Bachelor of Humanities, Bachelor of Industrial Design, Bachelor of Information Technology (Interactive Multimedia and Design, Bachelor of Journalism, and the Bachelor of Music degree program for the 2010-2011 fall/winter session.
March 12, 2010
• Last day to withdraw from fall/winter and winter-term courses.

• Good Friday Statutory holiday. University closed.
April 5 (classes follow a Friday schedule) , 2010
• Last day of fall/winter and winter-term classes.. Some lectures, laboratories, review tutorials, etc. may take place in Review Period until the end of Winter term on April 7.
April 6- 7, 2010
• Review Period. Some lectures, laboratories, review tutorials, etc. may take place.
April 7, 2010
• Winter term ends.
• Last day for handing in term assignments, subject to any earlier course deadline.
April 8 - 24 (including Saturdays), 2010
• Final examinations in winter term and fall/winter courses will be held. It may be necessary to schedule examinations during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa.
May 1, 2010
• Last day for receipt of applications for admission to the Bachelor of Journalism program and the Child Studies program for the 2010-2011 fall/winter session.
June 1, 2010
•  Last day for receipt of applications for admission to a program (except Bachelor of Architectural Studies, Bachelor of Humanities, Bachelor of Industrial Design, Bachelor of Information Technology (Interactive Multimedia and Design, Bachelor of Journalism, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Social Work and Child Studies program) for the 2010-2011 fall/winter session from mature applicants, from those presenting post-secondary education qualifications and from those transferring from other universities in Canada or the United States, and from applicants with high school qualifications from Canada and the United States .
June 12-23 (may include evenings and Saturdays), 2010      
• Fall/winter and winter term deferred final examinations will be held.

• Last day for receipt of applications for internal degree transfers to allow for registration for the 2010-2011 fall/winter session.

• Last day for receipt of applications for undergraduate degree program transfers.
May 7, 2010
• Deadline for fee payment or assignment of funding to ensure payment is processed to your account without incurring a late charge.
May 10, 2010
• Early summer and full summer classes begin.
May 21, 2010
• Last day for registration in early summer and full summer courses.
May 24, 2010
• Victoria Day. Statutory holiday. University closed.
May 31, 2010
• Last day to withdraw from early summer courses with full fee adjustment.
June 11, 2010
• Last day for academic withdrawal from early summer courses.
• Last day to withdraw from full summer courses with a full fee adjustment.
June 21, 2010
• Last day of early summer classes. Full summer classes resume July 5.
June 24-28, 2010
• Early summer examinations.
June 30, 2010
• Final deadline for summer term fee payment.
July 1, 2010
• Canada Day. Statutory holiday. University closed.
July 5, 2010
• Late summer classes begin. Full summer classes resume.
July 16, 2010
• Last day for registration in late summer courses.
July 23, 2010
• Last day for withdrawal from late summer courses with full fee adjustment.
July 30, 2010
• Last day for academic withdrawal from late summer and full summer courses.
August 2, 2010
• Civic Holiday. University closed.
August 16, 2010
• Last day of late summer and full summer classes.
August 19-24, 2010
• Summer examinations (including Saturday) .
September 30, 2010
• Last day for applications for review of grades for summer courses.
October 1-2, 2010
• Summer deferrals.
