The Academic Year 2009-2010

Graduate Studies

The following schedule contains the dates prescribed by the University Senate for academic activities. Dates relating to fee payment, cancellation of course selections, late charges, and other fees or charges will be published at carleton.ca/fees and in the Important Dates and Deadlines section of the Registration Website (carleton.ca/registration).  

The academic year is divided into three terms:

Summer term: May - August
Fall term: September - December
Winter term: January - April

Courses are offered in the following patterns:

Early summer: May - June
Late summer: July - August
Full summer: May - August
Fall term: September - December
Winter term: December - April
Fall/winter: September - April

Courses are offered during the day and the evening.

Summer Term 2009

May 8
•  Full summer and early summer courses begin.
May 18
•  Statutory holiday, University closed.
May 22
• Last day for registration and course changes for early summer and full summer courses.
• Students who have not yet deposited five (5) final copies of their thesis in the Office of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research must register.
May 25-29
• Classes suspended.
June 26
•  Last day of classes for early summer. (Note: Full summer courses resume July 6)
June 30, July 2-4 (including Saturdays)
•  Early summer final examinations will be held. It may be necessary to schedule examinations during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa.
July 1
•  Statutory holiday, University closed.
July 6
•  Late summer courses begin. Full summer courses resume
July 10
•  Last day for registration and course changes for late summer courses.
July 24
•  Last day to withdraw from summer courses.
August 3
•  Civic holiday, University closed. Missed classes may meet August 13.
August 17
•  Last day of summer term classes.
August 18-19
• Review Period
August 20-25 (Including Saturdays)
•  Final examinations in full summer and late summer courses will be held. It may be necessary to schedule examinations during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa.

Fall Term 2009

September 1, 2009
• Last day for receipt of applications from potential fall graduates.
September 7
• Statutory holiday, University closed.
September 8
• Fall term begins.
September 8-9
• Academic Orientation. All students are expected to be on campus. Class and laboratory preparations, departmental introductions for students, and other academic preparation activities will be held.
September 9
• Orientation for Graduate Teaching Assistants.
September 10
• Fall and fall/winter classes begin.
September 23
• Last day for registration.
• Last day to change courses or sections for fall/winter and fall term courses.
• Students who have not yet deposited two (2) final copies of their thesis in the office of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research must register.
October 9
• University Day at Carleton. Undergraduate classes suspended.
October 12
• Statutory holiday, University closed.
November 16
• Last day to withdraw from fall term courses.
December 1
• Last day for receipt of applications from potential winter (February) graduates.
• Last day for submission to the thesis supervisor of six (6) examination copies of Master's and Ph.D. theses for winter graduation.
December 7
• Last day of fall-term classes.
 
December 8
•Review Day. Some lecture, laboratories, review tutorials, etc. may take place.
•Fall term ends.
 
December 9-22 (including Saturdays)
• Final examinations in fall term courses and mid-term examinations in fall/winter courses will be held. It may be necessary to schedule examinations during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa.
December 25 - January 1
• University closed.

Winter Term 2010

January 4, 2010
• Winter term begins.
• Winter term classes begin.
 
January 15
• Last day for registration for winter term courses.
• Last day to change courses or sections for winter term courses.
• Students who have not yet deposited the two (2) final copies of their thesis in the office of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research must register.
February 15-19 (includes February 15 statutory holiday)
• Winter Break, classes suspended.
March 1
• Last day for receipt of applications from potential Spring graduands.
• Last day for receipt of applications for admission from candidates who wish to be guaranteed consideration for financial assistance (including Carleton fellowships, scholarships and teaching assistantships) administered by Carleton University. Candidates whose applications are received after the March 1 deadline date may be considered for the award of a fellowship, scholarship or teaching assistantship.
• Last day for submission to the thesis supervisor of six (6) examination copies of Master’s and Ph.D. theses for Spring graduation.
March 12
• Last day to withdraw from fall/winter and winter-term courses.
April 2
Good Friday, statutory holiday, university closed.
April 5
• Last day of fall/winter and winter-term classes. Some lectures, laboratories, review tutorials, etc. may take place in Review Period until the end of winter term on April 7.
April 6-7
• Review Period. Some lectures, laboratories, review tutorials, etc. may take place.
April 7
• Winter term ends.
• Last day for handing in term assignments, subject to any earlier course deadline.
April 8-24 (including Saturdays)
• Final examinations in winter term and fall/winter courses will be held. It may be necessary to schedule examinations during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa.

Summer Term 2010

May 3
Summer registration for Ottawa University students begins.
 
May 10
Early summer and full summer classes begin.
May 21
Last day for registration in early summer and full summer courses.
Students who have not yet deposited the two (2) final copies of their thesis in the office of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research must register.
May 24
Victoria Day. Statutory holiday, university closed.
 
June 11
Last day for academic withdrawal from early summer courses
June 21
Last day of early summer classes. Full summer classes resume July 5.
June 24-28
Early summer examinations.
July 1
Canada Day statutory holiday, university closed.
July 5
Late summer classes begin. Full summer classes resume.
July 16
Last day for registration in late summer courses.
July 30
Last day for academic withdrawal from late summer and full summer courses.
August 2
Civic holiday, university closed.
August 16
Last day of late summer and full summer classes.
August 19-24
Summer examinations (including Saturday).
