and we met and we saw
and we spoke and we thought
and we built each our cities
in each our minds
and you talked and i built
and you joked and i built
and then i tore down
and built again
and you gave me a glimpse
and i liked what i saw
so we broke and we built
and we spoke and we thought
and we paused and we looked
and we smiled and we glanced
and we fashioned our cities
yours separate from mine
and i saw what i did
and was satisfied with all
and i joked while our battlements
were lowered a while
then i drew up my bridge
and i fired the first shot
and your walls came down crashing
and i saw it all
all the streets and the homes
and the people therein
and the road that lead up to
the high city
and your streets lay vacant
your city lay naked
and i took it all in
and was satisfied
and you saw my distraction
moved quickly to action
and i lay there defenseless
as well
now i'm unprotected
and i see you dejected
and i offer my help
to rebuild you
and i build you completely
destroy what's unseemly
and replace what you have
with my own
and i build from your wall
a road in between us
and say that it's all
for the best
and the sun starts to set
we exchange our regrets
and i shake your hand
and we're even
and we know we're both liars
in the night we set fires
to each other's beautiful
cities
and there we both stand
on the road built by hand
and my back faces
your ruins
and neither denies
that each other's fires
were more pretty than
both of our cities.
