Thesis title: Sexual size dimorphism and diet specialization in the common map turtle (Graptemys geographica)

Proposed Research
Teleost fish providing parental care: individual and intergenerational costs and consequences of nest predator burden
My PhD research thesis will examine the effects of nest predator burden on the parental behaviour, physiology and energy status of a fish that provides sole paternal care, the smallmouth bass. In addition to this, I intend to test for intergenerational consequences of nest predator burden and test for environmental and genetic effects on offspring performance and behaviour.

Side Project 1: Effects of barotrauma on the post-tournament behaviour and survival of smallmouth bass in Rainy Lake, Ontario
Barotrauma occurs when a fish is rapidly brought from depth and experiences dramatic changes in ambient pressure. In the fall of 2006 and 2007 we traveled to Rainy Lake in Northwestern Ontario to examine the incidence and effects of barotrauma at a smallmouth bass tournament, as well as the potential mitigating effects of 'fizzing'. These projects were done with the financial support of the Rainy Lake Fisheries Charity Trust.

Side Project 2: Latitudinal variation in the energetics and physiology of smallmouth bass parental care
