GENDER AND SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING:
PERSPECTIVES FROM WOMEN'S STUDIES

From at least the 1950s to the present, the relationship between gender & science & engineering has been a site for academic investigation and activist intervention. Now at the start of a new millenium, we seek to review the current state of research and to explore new directions for future research in this area.

To this end, this Call for papers focuses on the following topics and themes:

1. Is Science gendered: do women and men engage with S&E differently? Are the categories of gender sufficiently inclusive of diversity of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, physical/mental ability, and class? What are the implications and consequences of S&E within a knowledge-based society in terms of social justice?

2. Future tense: what alternative conceptions might there be for S&E in an equitable and sustainable society? What barriers stand in the way of achieving these goals?

3. Building interdisciplinary bridges: to what extent has gender-sensitive interdisciplinarity been achieved in S&E? What innovative approaches have been generated by interdisciplinarity? What constitutes "good" and "legitimate" S&E? Has social justice been promoted by bridges between the humanities, social sciences and natural & applied sciences, and with other sectors of society?

Proposals for papers should be no longer than 250-500 words, and should be sent preferably by e-mail (we also encourage you to send your proposal by courier or fax to Dr. Ruby Heap to avoid "lost" messages):
