Europe's Defense Policy and the New NATO Strategic Concept: A New Atlantic Partnership for the 21st Century?

This month NATO is set to release its new Strategic Concept. Today, Europe has also developed its own strategic and defense priorities. Beligian Defense Minister Pieter De Crem will speak to these and other issues relating to European and NATO defense and security.   
 
Pieter De Crem was appointed Belgium's minister of defense in December 2007. He has an extensive career in government and politics beginning in 1989. Later, Minister De Crem also became involved in municipal politics and was elected mayor of the city of Aalter (Belgium), being re-elected in both 2000 and 2006. He concurrently served as a member of the Belgian Parliament representing the Christian People's Party and, later, the Christian Democratic and Flemish (CD&V) party. In May 2003, he became leader of the CD&V, a position he held until he took over his current responsibilities as minister of defense.
