| Chris Penny Awarded Meritorious Service MedalReturn to top. Congratulations to CSDS Deputy Director Chris Penny on being awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (Military Division) by the Governor General on November 2. Chris, who is a reserve legal officer (Army Lieutenant-Colonel) in the Directorate of International and Operational Law in the Office of the Judge Advocate General, was recognized for his work on the negotiations for the Convention on Cluster Munitions. The conference will be held at the University of Calgary on February 18th and 19th 2011. Call for Papers: Original and innovative ideas that challenge present understandings are encouraged and international perspectives are welcome. The conference is open to both undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines. Original Proposals should be no longer than 1 page in length including the candidate’s names, contact information, a 250 word topic proposal and a 100 word biography. Please submit proposals by email to s3c2011@gmail.com. Presentations will be 15 minutes long. From: Aleksandra Pisarek apisarek@connect.carleton.ca Subject: Reflections on Rwanda (ROR) Program In May 2011, Reflections on Rwanda (ROR) will send between 10-15 Canadian students to visit the Republic of Rwanda with the purpose of becoming witnesses to the country’s history and to gain exposure to the factors that made the occurrence of a genocide possible. The program, which will last a total of 12-14 days, will focus not only on the study of the country’s troubled past, but it will also deal with the country’s current state and prospects for the future. The Reflections on Rwanda (ROR) Program is organized and run by Shout Canada – a grassroots organization whose aim is to examine and further understand the causes of genocide, as well as post-genocide healing and peace efforts. ROR is a tour of Rwanda throughout which participants meet with survivors, witnesses and rescuers of genocide, and various government and/or NGO representatives who each tell their story. The opportunities for first-hand learning are vast. Travelling to Rwanda with the ROR Program is a truly multidisciplinary lesson that touches on issues in law, conflict resolution, women studies, psychology, communication and other disciplines. What participants take out of the Program often depends on individual perspectives and academic background. Also, students may, if they wish, stay after the program to participate in internship or volunteer opportunities. The ROR team can also assist in finding a suitable internship opportunity to a qualified candidate. Last year, I had the privilege to intern at the Supreme Court of Rwanda, but there are other possibilities. If a student has a particular organization or research project in mind, the ROR team can assist in completing various formalities as we have fostered valued relationships in Rwanda. Program Requirements: • Hold a current passport • Between the ages of 18 to 30 years • Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or have completed a post-secondary degree in the past 24 months. | European Union Summer 2011 Study TourReturn to top. From: Ginette Lafleur ginette_lafleur@carleton.ca Subject: EU Study Tour 2011 Introduction: The EU Study Tour and Internship Program provides a unique opportunity for students in a variety of disciplines: business, economics, international European politics, international relations and social issues --to immerse themselves in the European Union and other institutions. You will have the opportunity to have “face to face” contact and dialogue with presenters and seminar leaders from the ranks of those actively involved in the day to day work of the EU, other European institutions, diplomatic representations to the EU (including Canada) and significant civil society organizations. You will experience the EU in action-- by attending a hearing at the European Court of Justice, sessions at the European Parliament and the European Commission, and media conferences, to mention only a few. We like to say this experience isn’t only “about the EU”¬it’s “in the EU”! Each year great effort is made to include and highlight topics of growing relevance to Europe and Canada as well as continue a core program of business, economic, political and social themes. As well, we offer substantial internship opportunities following the Tour for a selected group of students. Who We Are: The EU Study Tour and Internship Program is organized by a consortium of Canadian universities through the Network for European Studies (Canada). Carleton University (through the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies, EURUS) is an active member of this consortium and has sent students on the Tour since 2006. Academics from Canada’s leading EU studies programs and centres have contributed to making the activity well recognized within the EU, respected by its European and Canadian partners. Members of the Network have ensured that the Tour program meets high standards in content and participation. Information for Carleton Students: Eligibility: Graduate students at any level; and undergraduate students who will have completed at least the third year of study by end of the winter 2011 term. Preference is given to students enrolled in programs of the Institute of European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies, but the applications are welcome from students in other programs. Applicants should have some background in EU/European studies. Application Deadline: Applications should be submitted to Prof. Joan DeBardeleben in hard copy in 1311 Dunton Tower by January 24, 2010. Please write ‘EU Study Tour Application’ on the envelope containing your application materials. Application details are available on the EURUS website at www.carleton.ca/eurus. Selection for the Tour occurs through Carleton; after you are selected, you will then submit a follow-up form to the consortium’s Tour administration (see below). Cost: The fee for the three weeks for Carleton students, including transportation between and in European cities and all accommodation, is $2,800. In addition, you are responsible for your own transatlantic travel arrangements and most meals. Academic credit: To participate in the Tour you must be registered in an associated summer course (0.5 credit). Regular university tuition fees apply to registration in this course. Grants: The Centre for European Studies at Carleton offers grants to cover a part of the costs of the Tour and of the associated Carleton course for students with financial need; you may apply for these grants once you are accepted on the Tour.
