Anthropology and Human Rights
Examines the concepts of “cultural relativism” and “universalism.” What are human rights? Who has them? How do notions of “human rights” evolve? What about other, non-Western concepts of “individual,” “collectivity,” “rights” and “responsibilities”? What about human rights violations and abuses?Prerequisites: ANTH 1001 and ANTH 1002, or ANTH 1003 [1.0], or SOCI 1001 and SOCI 1002, or SOCI 1003 [1.0], or HUMR 1001 [1.0], and third-year standing.
Lecture three hours a week.
