M. Architectural Studies
About the Program
The Master of Architectural Studies (M.A.S.) is a 6 credit non-accredited degree for students interested in pursuing in-depth architectural research. Students holding a M.A.S. may be considered for admission to the PhD program in Architecture.

Architecture does not permit the C+ option. (see Section 11.2 of the General Regulations).
Admission Requirements
Successful completion of a degree in architectural studies with a minimum academic average of B- in their undergraduate studies.
Application must be accompanied by:
- an essay of no more than 1500 words stating the topic of their future thesis, their selected focus of study defined geographically, temporally and architecturally including possible primary sources;
- a portfolio of projects and creative works; and
- a review of their interaction and experience in architectural or related practice (may be text, drawings and models, or built work) if applicable.
Professional experience may be taken into consideration.
Where applicants do not hold a degree in architecture but possess an honours degree in a related discipline, equivalence may be considered on the basis of a demonstrated, exceptional research ability and high academic standing (B+ minimum average).
When professional work is included as part of an applicant's portfolio, a precise description of the applicant's involvement and responsibilities in the completion of the project must be included.
All applicants must provide two confidential letters of reference on the prescribed forms and a statement of academic and professional objectives.
The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs requires applicants whose native tongue is not English to be tested for proficiency in English, as described in Section 3.6 of the General Regulations of this Calendar.
An admissions committee, which includes the supervisor of graduate studies, will determine the merits of each applicant on the basis of academic record, evidence of visual and architectural design ability, and, where applicable, professional experience. Enrolment is limited. The School's admission policy is governed by the availability of graduate student space.

M. Architecture Professional
About the Program
The Master of Architecture Professional is a studio based degree program. The program stresses creativity and innovation within theoretical and practical parameters.
Students entering the program with an undergraduate BAS in Design will follow an 8.0 credit curriculum culminating in a two-credit thesis [M.Arch]. Students entering with a Bachelor of Architectural Studies (Urbanism, Conservation and Sustainability, or Philosophy and Criticism) or an Honours Degree in an unrelated field, will follow a 15.5 credit curriculum [M.Architecture 1] culminating in a two-credit Directed Research Thesis.

- Application must be accompanied by two examples of the student's academic writing and a portfolio of their most recent studio work demonstrating facility in architectural design and methods of representation.
M. Architecture 1 - 15.5 credits
- Successful completion of a Bachelor of Architectural Studies (Urbanism, Conservation & Sustainability, or Philosophy and Criticism) degree with a minimum academic average of B- in their undergraduate studies.
- Where applicants do not hold a degree in architecture but possess either an honours degree in a related discipline, equivalence may be considered on the basis of a demonstrated, exceptional research ability and high academic standing (B+ minimum average).
Applicable to both 8.0 credit- and 15.5 credit- programs
- Professional experience may be taken into consideration.

- ARCS 5909 and ARCN 5909 normally extend over two terms. This project will follow guidelines prescribed by the Associate Director (Graduate Programs).
- The thesis is expected to include both a written text and a design component with appropriate modes of two and three-dimensional representation, including digital. Final thesis documentation must satisfy the requirements established by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs.
Ph.D. Architecture
About the Program
Carleton University's Ph.D. in Architecture is an innovative, comprehensive doctoral program that fuses research with critical practice in architecture. Exceptionally talented and thoughtful architects are invited to undertake original, speculative, and experimental research within the well-established trinity of pathos, ethos, and logos that has come to distinguish the School of Architecture at Carleton.
At the Carleton University Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism, doctoral projects will draw on the interrelated genetic, performative, and reflective aspects of architecture, design and material process.

Admission Requirements
- The normal requirement for admission to the doctoral program in Architecture is a Master of Architecture or a recognized equivalent in a discipline related to the strengths of the program.
- A minimum GPA of A-.
- Students enrolled in the Master of Architectural Studies at Carleton University who have shown outstanding academic performance and research promise may be admitted to the Ph.D. program without completing the master's program. Normal Ph.D. program requirements, as stated below, will apply. Each case will be considered on an individual basis for fast-tracking to the Ph.D. program.
- A portfolio including an essay of no more than a) 1,500 words stating the topic of their future dissertation, selected focus of study defined geographically, temporally and architecturally including possible primary sources, b) a portfolio of projects and creative works, c) a review of interaction and experience in architectural practice, and d) a cover letter addressing why they have decided to apply to Carleton University for their Ph.D.
- The Ph.D. program in Architecture must be undertaken on a full-time basis.
- Students must be proficient (e.g. able to undertake research) in one language other than English or French.
Program Requirements

Students admitted to the PhD program in Architecture, will be required to complete a total of 10.0 credits as follows:
- 1.0 credit in core Workshop courses
- 1.0 credit in core Seminar courses
- 2.0 credits in PhD. Colloquium
- 1.0 credit in comprehensive examination
- 1.0 credit in dissertation proposal examination
- 4.0 credits in oral defence of thesis

Graduate Diploma in Architectural Conservation
About the Program
The Diploma in Architectural Conservation builds on the strengths of the existing professional Master of Architecture program with five additional credits dealing specifically with the theory and practice of architectural conservation. Students are expected to address heritage issues or questions in their M.Arch. studios and required to address heritage issues or questions in their M.Arch. thesis.

Students must be admitted to the Graduate Diploma in Architectural Conservation from the Master of Architecture Professional Program.
A minimum academic average of B+ in their first year of graduate studies.
Applicants must submit documentation of studio work demonstrating their understanding of heritage conservation.
Professional experience may be taken into consideration.
When professional work is included as part of the portfolio, a precise description of the applicant's involvement and responsibilities in the completion of the project must be included.
All applicants must provide two confidential letters of reference on the prescribed forms and a statement of academic and professional objectives.
Part-time studies are not permitted.
