The Academic Year

Graduate Studies 2011-2012

The following schedule contains the dates prescribed by the University Senate for academic activities. Dates relating to fee payment, cancellation of course selections, late charges, and other fees or charges will be published in the Important Dates and Deadlines section of the Registration website (carleton.ca/registration).

The academic year is divided into three terms:
Summer term: May - August
Fall term: September - December
Winter term: January - April

Courses are offered in the following patterns:
Early summer: May - June
Late summer: July - August
Full summer: May - August
Fall term: September - December
Winter term: December - April
Fall/winter: September - April

Courses are offered during the day and the evening.

Winter Term 2012 
January 4, 2012
  • Winter-term classes begin. 
January 17, 2012
  • Last day for registration for winter term courses. 
  • Last day to change courses or sections for winter term courses. 
  • Students who have not yet deposited the two (2) final copies of their thesis in the Office of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs must register.
February 20, 2012
  • Statutory holiday. University closed. 
February 20 - 24, 2012 
  • Winter Break, classes suspended. 
March 1, 2012
  • Last day for receipt of applications from potential Spring (June) graduates. 
  • Last day for receipt of appliations for admission from candidates who wish to be guaranteed consideration for financial assistance (including Carleton fellowships, scholarships and teaching assistantships) administered by Carleton University. Candidates whose applications are received after the March 1 deadline may be considered for the award of a fellowship, scholarship or teaching assistantship.
  • Last day for submission to the thesis supervisor of six (6) examination copies of Master's and Ph.D. theses for Spring (June) graduation.
April 5, 2012
  • Winter term ends. 
  • Last day of fall/winter and winter-term classes. 
  • Last day for academic withdrawal from fall/winter and winter-term courses. 
April 6, 2012
  • Statutory holiday. University closed.  
April 9-10, 2012 
  • No classes take place. 
April 11 - 24, 2012 (including Saturdays)
  • Final examinations in winter term and fall/winter courses will be held.
  • Examinations are normally held in the day and evening during the Monday to Saturday period. In exceptional circumstances it may be necessary to schedule an examination on a Sunday. 
Summer Term 2012 
May 7, 2012
  • Early summer and full summer classes begin. 
May 14, 2012
  • Last day for registration and course changes for early summer courses. 
May 18, 2012
  • Last day for registration and course changes for full summer courses.
  • Graduate students who have not yet deposited two final copies of their thesis in the Office of the Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs must register. If you don’t deposit final copies of your thesis to FGPA by this date, you will not be eligible to graduate in Spring. (2012.03.09 Note: Date has been corrected from May 14 to May 18)
May 21, 2012
  • Statutory holiday. University closed. 
May 31, 2012
  • Last day to withdraw from early summer courses with full fee adjustment. 
June 8, 2012
  • Last day to withdraw from full summer courses with a full fee adjustment. 
June 19, 2012
  • Last day of early summer classes (NOTE: Full summer classes resume after Canada day). 
  • Last day for academic withdrawal from early summer courses. 
June 22 - 29, 2012 
  • Early summer examinations will be held. Examinations are normally held in the day and evening during the Monday to Saturday period. In exceptional circumstances it may be necessary to schedule an examination on a Sunday. 
July 2, 2012
  • Statutory holiday. University closed. 
July 3, 2012
  • Late summer classes begin. Full summer classes resume. 
July 10, 2012
  • Last day for registration and course changes for late summer courses. 
July 20, 2012
  • Last day for withdrawal from late summer courses with full fee adjustment. 
August 1, 2012
  • Last day for submission to the thesis supervisor of six (6) examination copies of Master's and Ph.D. theses for Fall graduation.
August 6, 2012
  • Statutory Holiday. University closed. 
August 14, 2012
  • Last day summer term classes. 
  • Last day for academic withdrawal from late summer and full summer courses and any other courses that end this term. 
August 18 - 23, 2012 
  • Summer examinations will be held. Examinations are normally held in the day and evening during the Monday to Saturday period. In exceptional circumstances it may be necessary to schedule an examination on a Sunday.
