All registered students, full- and part-time, are members of the Carleton University Students' Association. The Students' Association has many functions; providing services to students, creating community awareness of our campus, and representing student views on a wide range of interests both internally and externally. The legislative body of the association is the students' council, elected in February for a twelve-month term beginning the following May. The graduate representative is chosen by the GSA in October. The February election sees selection of the president, finance commissioner, and faculty representatives; the vice presidents are chosen by the president from among these representatives, and ratified by council shortly thereafter. The Carleton University Students' Association provides numerous services: Oliver's Pub; Rooster's Coffee House; Peer Support; the Women's Center; the International Students' Center; the Mature and Part-Time Students Center; the Carleton Disabled Awareness Center; the Off-Campus Students' Center; Photo Service; Information Carleton; the Games Area; The Store; The Pharmacy; the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Center; Foot Patrol; Student Academic Action Bureau. CUSA funds The Charlatan newspaper which is autonomous from the association. CUSA also helps fund CKCU-Radio Carleton, an FM station which broadcasts on 93.1 and is heard all over the national capital region and in points of eastern Ontario. Many CUSA operations emanate from the University Center, with policy set by the Students' Council. The Unicenter, open from 7:30 A.M. to 2:00 A.M. most days, includes, in addition to the CUSA operations, facilities for food service, a faculty club, lounges, Health Services, the Canada Employment Center, and the Ontario Public Interest Research Group (OPIRG). CUSA is one of the founding and active members of the Canadian Federation of Students and the Ontario Federation of Students, lobby groups for student rights at the provincial and federal level. Students' interests are represented by the association's membership in the Canadian Federation of Students, and by the on-campus work of the students' council on issues ranging from government cutbacks to housing shortages and bus-route alterations. To aid in this work, CUSA has a full-time staff, which works to benefit and improve the association and its membership. CUSA relies on input from all students to continue to be as successful in the future as it has been in the past. The Carleton University Students' Association offices are located in room 401 of the Unicenter, and may be reached by phone at 788-6688.
