Workshop on Open Source Best Practices (WOSBP 2008)

Goals

The commercial use of open source is hindered by many factors. These include a lack of integration with traditional requirements-driven product development approaches, licensing issues, a clash with existing corporate culture, and the perception that in order to benefit from open source you need to open your source to the outside world. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practioners with experience in open source adoption and value creation from open source, and to document the best practices. The workshop is co-located with the Montreal Conference on e-Technologies (MCeTech), and will take place on Jan 23, 2008.

Topics

The workshop continues a central theme of the OOPSLA 2007 Workshop on Integration of Open Source Components into Large Software Systems, the identification of best practices for open source. Specifically, we are looking for contributions on the following challenges around the commercial use of open source systems (OSS) and an open source approach:

  • Product development front-end: OSSs often start with a specific user need. How can customer requirements be collected more systematically in an open source project?
  • Licensing: Licenses are a powerful tool for business strategy, but how do you ensure that your software properly adheres to the licensing terms of open source you build on?
  • Open source adoption: Open source development practices often clash with existing corporate culture. How do we create an environment receptive to the adoption of open source?
  • Internal use of open source development practices: What lessons from open source projects can we apply to the organization of internal projects?

Participation

Interested participants are requested to submit a short position paper (4 pages, IEEE conference proceedings format) to weiss@sce.carleton.ca and bailetti@sce.carleton.ca. Letters of interest by people who want to participate in the discussions, but do not have a position paper, are also welcome.

The program committee will review submissions and select the position papers to be accepted based on their relevance, soundness and novelty. Authors of accepted papers are expected to attend the workshop. In order to maximize the time for discussion and collaboration among the participants (breakout sessions, final discussion), the presentations themselves will be short. Participants are expected to have read the position papers in advance.

Accepted papers and up-to-date details on the organization of the workshop will be posted on the workshop web site. We also plan to summarize the workshop results for a journal.
