Technology Innovation Management

Course delivery

A distinctive feature of the TIM program is that all courses are delivered to in-class and remote students. Remote students can interact with professors and fellow students using the BigBlueButton web conferencing system. This system is also available to students outside class time to collaborate on their assignments and projects. Courses are scheduled, moreover, to minimize disruption to your work.

Admission requirements

The normal requirement for admission to the TIM Master's program is a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer science or a related discipline, with at least high honours standing. Candidates are required to have two years experience in technical work in a technology based industry prior to admission.

Candidates applying for admission with degrees not in the discipline of engineering will be considered by the admissions committee. The committee is responsible for establishing criteria for degree equivalencies.

The application process

The first step in applying for the program is to request an online application account. Once your account has been created, you can submit a full application. More on the application process.

Thesis or project - a choice

Subject to the approval of the admissions committee, students in the master's program may choose to complete the degree by successfully completing either a thesis or a project.

Master's Degree by Thesis
Students who select the M.A.Sc. thesis option learn a host of valuable skills as they define a research problem, develop their research method and carry out their research. Students come out of this process as experts in their chosen domain of knowledge, confident of their analytic capabilities, and able to present their research results convincingly to any audience. A TIM thesis makes a significant contribution to the research literature in technology innovation management.

All master's students in the thesis option are required to complete a total of 5.5 credits as follows:

  • 1.5 compulsory credits: TTMG 5001, TTMG 5002, and TTMG 5003
  • 2.0 approved credits from a list of restricted elective courses
  • a thesis equivalent to 2.0 credits

Typically, a student in the thesis option takes 2 or 3 courses per term. A student entering the program in September generally finishes the required course work by the following June, and is already working on his or her thesis. The final thesis defence commonly occurs in the winter of the second year – about 18 months after entering the program. Learn more about the courses offered in the TIM program.

Because the M.A.Sc. is a research degree, there is financial support for students in the thesis option. This support comes in the form of research assistantships, teaching assistantships, departmental scholarships, and tuition scholarships.

Master's Degree by Project
Students who select the M.Eng. project option develop leadership skills by carrying out applied research in a topic of direct interest to a management community. Projects are completed individually or in small teams of students working in a distributed, cooperative mode. There are three types of projects: projects in which students create a set of learning modules on an area of expertise, implement a tool, or solve a management problem for an external stakeholder. The typical time for a project is 1-2 terms.

All master's students in the project option are required to complete a total of 5.5 credits of which at least 5.0 must be at the 5000-level or above, as follows:

  • 1.5 compulsory credits: TTMG 5001, TTMG 5002, and TTMG 5003
  • 2.0 approved credits from a list of restricted elective courses
  • 1.0 credit of approved non-restricted electives
  • a graduate project equivalent to 1.0 credit

Students take two courses a term and finish the program in six terms over two years. Each entering class forms a cohort that stays together for the two years. They learn with and teach each other while working on collaborative teams in both their courses and for their research projects. Learn more about the courses offered in the TIM program.
