Sara
Ben Ladouceur

your ghost is in my bones

my mother named you Sara
she made and named a baby:
two sons conceived, then you
and then simply
not you

my mother's only daughter
could never really happen

this body, the last to be born
in a family of three sons, my body
it's our body
just as it was your place I took
the two of us, closer than connected
  more than brother and sister

watch me sleep:
it's Sara wide awake
the girl who never learned English
instead speaks in gurgles and snores
watch me bring men home:
to meet the parents
these are not my men
because my heart is half yours:
  between every thump
is another thump, a silent one
                                   yours
