Thank you message

It is the end of an era.

On August 22nd 2008, the Centre for Intensive Language Education will wave goodbye to its final group of students and close the door on a 25 year history.

As we say goodbye, we wish to thank everyone who has been a part of the Centre’s intensive ESL community over the years.

To the teachers, who have given so much of themselves to create warm supportive vibrant classes. You have encouraged, challenged and motivated a generation of international students to take control of their own language learning processes…to learn by doing…and to feel more confident in their ability to communicate their own ideas in English.  You have touched lives. They will remember you.

To the staff, who have worked tirelessly, often behind the scenes, processing applications, answering phones, organizing events, promoting our programs, and balancing the books.  Without you, our program could not have run so smoothly for such a long time. Your contributions have been greatly valued.

To the homestay families, who have accepted our international students into their homes and families. The warmth, consideration, and commitment you have shown toward your students has been remarkable. In your homes, students have felt safe and secure and cared for. And from this place of stability they have been able to pursue their studies without the distraction uncertainty brings. We could not have done it without you.

To the non-ESL students who have connected themselves in one way or another with our students. To all you conversation partners, language exchange partners, and general Paterson Hall hangers around. You have reached out to our students as friends; you have added to the warmth of our hallways and lobby with your banter; and you have shown our students an authentic face of Canada. It has not gone unnoticed.

And, most importantly, to you - the students - who have traveled halfway around the world to live and study in a new and unfamiliar culture.  You are truly amazing and courageous people. It has been a great pleasure to meet you, to teach you, and to watch you grow into stronger more confident more effective English language speakers…and writers…and listeners.  May you look back on your time at Carleton fondly and may the language that you have learned serve you well in your lives ahead.

Thank you and we wish everyone the best in this time of change.
