Dr. George Iwama

Dr. George IwamaDr. George Iwama is a comparative physiologist interested in the stress response in fish.

With those in his lab, he has studied how biological and abiotic stressors affect the health and welfare of fish around the world. The stressors studied include handling such as occurs on fish farms, temperature change, pathogens, toxins, acid-base changes, hypoxia, and others.

He is currently interested in induced tolerance, or how exposure to a stressor can cause an increase in resistance to a subsequent stressor.

Dr. Iwama is the current Dean of Science at Carleton University. He has been active in establishing outreach programs such as the Café Scientifique.
