Members of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada research group, "On the Identity Trail: Understanding the Importance and Impact of Anonymity and Authentication in a Networked Society" (www.anonequity.org), together with co-sponsors from the Centre on Values and Ethics at Carleton University (www.carleton.ca/cove) and the Sheldon Chumir Foundation for Ethics in Leadership in Calgary, Alberta (www.chumirethicsfoundation.ca) invite you to attend a two-day conference devoted to exploring the normative, psychological and social dimensions of privacy. The conference will be held at 102 Azrieli Theatre, Carleton University, on November 5th and 6th. All Carleton University students can register free.

Topics to be addressed by speakers include: privacy and rationality, the popular significance of anonymity, privacy and democratic ideals, privacy and the media, privacy and civil liberties, the public/private divide in history, and cultural conceptions of privacy.

Call For Student Papers

A portion of the conference will be devoted to student presentations on its central themes, and papers are now being accepted from interested graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. The due date for submissions is July 1, 2005. Papers should be prepared for blind review and not exceed 25 minutes reading time (approximately 4000 words). To submit a paper, mail three copies to the following address:

Please include with your submission (a) a cover letter containing your name, institutional affiliation, telephone number, and electronic and postal mailing addresses, and (b) an abstract of approximately 250 words.

To register for the conference, please fill in the registration form and mail it to us at:

The registration fee for the conference is $60.00 CAD ($48.00 USD) + GST (=$64.20 CAD / $51.36 USD) for regular attendees. (Please note that registration is free for students and members of the On the Identity Trail research group, COVE, and the Chumir Foundation.) Meal costs are as follows: $15.00 CAD ($12.00 USD) + GST (=$16.05 CAD / $12.84 USD) for Saturday lunch at Carleton University’s Baker’s Grille Restaurant, $15.00 CAD ($12.00 USD) + GST (=$16.05 CAD / $12.84 USD) for Sunday lunch at Baker’s Grille, and $30.00 CAD ($24.00 USD) + GST ($32.10 CAD / $25.68) for Saturday dinner at the Palais Imperial Chinese Restaurant (311 Dalhousie Street, downtown Ottawa). Conference hotel

Travel

The main city bus routes between downtown Ottawa to Carleton University are the No. 4 and the No. 7 ($2.50 - exact change required). Taxi service between the downtown and the university costs under $20.00 CAD for a one-way trip. Taxi service from the Ottawa International Airport (www.ottawa-airport.ca) to the university costs about the same. Taxi service from the airport to the downtown area costs around $35.00 CAD.

To travel from Ottawa’s Via Rail Train Station (www.viarail.ca/tourists/en_tour_dpop_otta.html) to the downtown area, you can either take a taxi (under $20.00 CAD) or the No. 95 city bus route ($2.50).

A taxi ride from Ottawa’s central coach bus station (see www.greyhound.ca or www.voyageur.ca) to the downtown core costs under $25.00 CAD. The No. 4 city bus will take you from the station to the downtown core as well ($2.50).
