About Ottawa

Ottawa straddles the Ontario-Quebec border. It is home to the Federal Parliament Buildings, the National Art Gallery, the National Arts Centre, and a number of other cultural and tourist attractions. The city also has a good night life, centred around the Byward Market and Elgin Street.

ACCOMMODATIONS

If you choose to stay downtown, a number 7 or number 4 bus from the Rideau Centre will take you to and from Carleton University. Taxi rides from downtown to and from Carleton University cost under $20 (Canadian).

Conference Hotel

A number of rooms have been reserved at the Lord Elgin Hotel for the conference. The room rates are $128.80 (including applicable taxes) for both a single and a double occupancy. There is parking at $13.80 a day and a shuttle from the airport at $11.00 one way and $18.00 round trip. The hotel can be contacted at 1-(800) 267-4298 or by email at reservations@lordelginhotel.ca. Be sure when making a reservation to indicate that it is for "the Intervention Conference, Carleton University." The Hotel is a short bus ride from the Carleton University campus.Buses(including the no. 4 and 7) stop three blocks from the hotel on Rideau Street. The Hotel is located in the Centre of Ottawa, within walking distance of many restaurants and near the Parliament buildings.

Bed and Breakfasts

If you are on a tight budget, a B&B might be a good option. An extensive list can be found in the Eastern Ontario (area 6) section of the bbcanada.com web site. Another list is available by clicking here. You might consider The Ottawa Guest House, not too far from Carleton. The rates for a single are $60 and for a double, $70. It can be reached at (613) 233-7894 or bbcanada.com. (We are not recommending this B&B; it is only offered as information.) When you phone a B&B remember to ask about how easy it will be to get to Carleton University.

Hostels

If you are on an even more limited budget, you might consider a youth hostel. The Shenkman Residence is run by the National Capital Region YMCA/YWCA. Check their web site for guest rates and booking information. Still not cheap enough? Well if you don't mind sleeping in an old jail cell, you could stay at the Ottawa Youth International Hostel, located in a historical building that was the site of Canada's last legal execution!

TRAVEL

From Ottawa International Airport, there is taxi service to Carleton University for under $20 (Canadian), or to the Hotel Lord Elgin and the downtown core for approximately $35. A shuttle service from the airport to the Hotel Lord Elgin is available for $18 return. There is also city bus service, the number 97, which will take you to the city centre, but we do not recommend city bus service for getting to Carleton University.

From the Via Rail Train Station, there is taxi service to Carleton University for under $25 (Canadian), or to the Hotel Lord Elgin and the downtown core for under $20. The train station also has city bus service. To get to Carleton, take the 95 to the corner of Albert and Bank and then the 7 south, along Bank street to Carleton. Or, take the 95 to Hurdman and then the 4 to Carleton. To get downtown, take the 95 "Baseline" to the intersection of Albert and Bank. This puts you 4 blocks from the Hotel Lord Elgin.

From the Bus Station (Greyhound or Voyageur), there is taxi service to Carleton for under $25 (Canadian), or to the downtown core for under $25. In front of the Bus Station, there is the 4 city bus that will take you to Carleton University or walk a block east to Bank St. where you can pick up the number 7 bus going South to Carleton University or North into the downtown core.
