John Chant is an Emeritus Professor of Economics at Simon Fraser University. He has also taught at the University of Edinburgh, Duke University, Queen’s University, University College Dar es Salaam, and Carleton University. He is a past recipient of the Western Economic Association’s Distinguished Teaching Award. He has numerous publications in the areas of monetary theory and policy, the Canadian financial system and its regulation, and the economics of universities. John has served as Director of the Economic Council’s financial market group, Research Director of the Task Force on the Future of the Canadian Financial Services Sector (the Mackay Committee), a member of the C.D. Howe Institute’s Monetary Policy Committee, and Special Adviser to the Governor of the Bank of Canada. He has also been a consultant to the World Bank, the governments of Indonesia and Viet Nam, the Harvard Institute for International Development, the Canadian International Development Agency, the Economic Research Bureau of Tanzania, and a variety of Canadian government agencies and departments. He is currently a Director of the Canadian Payments Association.
