About Us

The Southeast Asian refugee crisis of 1979 and the early 1980s formed the historical background for the establishment in 1985 of the Research Resource Division for Refugees (RRDR), predecessor of the Centre for International Migration and Settlement Studies (CIMSS). The late Gertrud Neuwirth, founding director of the RRDR, had been personally involved in Ottawa’s civic campaign to sponsor refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.

In the late 1980s and 1990s, the Centre’s research activities included the settlement experience of Southeast Asian refugees, pilot studies of Salvadoran and Ethiopian refugees, and cultural profiles of numerous ethno-religious groups. At the same time, it developed a publishing stream.

With the turn of the century, the Centre also entered into online publishing. Its research stream emphasized collaborative projects on, e.g., the settlement of Sudanese in Ontario and the evolution of racism – and the struggle against it – in Canada.

On February 1, 2010, the Centre was re-launched as the Centre for International Migration and Settlement Studies (CIMSS) to better reflect the scope of its activities.
